Detroit's Murals in the Market festival — named one of Smithsonian magazine's top five mural festivals in the world — has announced the roster of artists for its fifth iteration, set for Sept. 14-21.

Joey Salamon, '10, this week started painting his creation on Sheldon Avenue NE, between Fulton and Library streets. The mural is funded by the Grand Rapids Downtown Development Authority. City leaders say it is the most extensive street mural installed in Grand Rapids.

Artist Joey Salamon and a team of painters will soon begin installing a new mural on the surface of Sheldon Boulevard between Fulton and Library Streets in Downtown Grand Rapids.

The mural, Rainbow Road, will be painted by Joey Salamon, a 2010 Grand Valley State University graduate who specializes in brightly colored street art and murals. It will nearly cover the entire 342-foot stretch of Sheldon, making it the first official street mural in Grand Rapids.

The month of June, known nationally as LBGTQ+ Pride Month, has come to an end, however the buzz in Grand Rapids continues around a colorful mural that will permanently commemorate the cause.
